The Galapagos Islands: The ultimate
natural paradise
The Galapagos Islands situated 950km. from the coast of Ecuador
are made up of 13 large islands, 6 small islands and more than
40 islets of volcanic origin. The majority of oceanic islands
in the world have been greatly affected by the presence of man.
Galapagos is unique in this respect as it has preserved 95%
of its native plants and animals.
This extraordinary natural laboratory is a fusion of unique
flora and fauna found only on these remote islands. Galapagos
is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Whale Sanctuary, Biosphere
Reserve and one of the 7 underwater marvels of the World. It
was made famous by the scientific studies of Charles Darwin
and Theodore Wolf.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve is one of the largest on the planet
and 97% of its land territory is made up of Galapagos National
Park.
Giant tortoises, marine and land iguanas and lava lizards are
among the most famous of Galapagos reptiles. These reptiles
along with 50% of bird species, 32% of plant species and 25%
of fish species and a large number of invertebrates are endemic
and found only in this natural sanctuary.
There is abundant bird life to be found on Galapagos from 13
species of Darwin Finch to penguins, cormorants, boobies, albatross
and flamingos all of which have adapted to their unique environment.
