The principal objective of the Pescado Azul Women's Association is to increase the quality of life of fishermen and their families in the community of Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island, Galapagos. The Association is made up of 6 women. The business provides a sustainable economic alternative for these women and the 200 fishermen who lack full time employment on the island.

The Pescado Azul Project began in 2001 with the objective of producing and commercializing sea food to improve the Standard of living of the community of Puerto Villamil. (Isabela, Galapagos).

The Project began when a group of women got together and proposed a project to help fishermen and create jobs for themselves. The women decided to experiment with fish, an appetizing but unexploited product in Galapagos. They also completed training courses in the production of fish products. Today, the women produce different types of fish products: smoked fish fillets, croquettes and pâté. The project has allowed these women to develop an alternative source of income and maintain a commercial outlet where the product is sold thus fulfilling their objectives.

Pescado Azul objectives:
  • Strengthen artisan fishing families on Isabela Island
  • Improve the family economy through the creation of sustainable economic alternatives
  • Support the conservation of the Galapagos Marine Reserve
  • Promote equal opportunities for women in education, training and employment
  • Establish appropriate level of technology for developing products.
  • Improve the quality of products.
  • Increase profitability of the fishing sector
  • Guarantee stability of marine resources through the use of different fish species.
This project is a source of income and employment for fishermen's wives in Isabela. It has also created a market for the sale of fresh fish and fish products on the island.
